After He Remembered He Lost Me Chapter 13
“Why? Why are you always so heartless to me?”
With tears in her eyes, Mara could not understand, “You clearly agreed back then. You agreed to marry me.”
It was he who first gave her hope, telling her he was willing to marry her.
Five years ago, she put on her wedding dress with joy, holding her father’s arm as she walked toward him. Mara thought that would be the happiest and most unforgettable moment of her life.
But with a single careless gesture, he destroyed everything completely.
He called off the wedding.
In front of all the guests, when the officiant, smiling broadly, asked if he was willing to take her as his wife.
Adrian was silent for a long time. Only after Mara urged him repeatedly did he seem to come back to his senses, looking at her with nothing but determination in his eyes.
Then, he uttered the words that shocked everyone.
“I do not.”
“I do not want to marry Mara.”
He dropped the ring he had been holding tightly, then removed the groom’s boutonniere from his chest, and turned away without hesitation.
The Ellington family became the laughingstock of everyone in their circle, mocked for all their scheming and planning, only to end up with nothing.
Of course, they were not willing to swallow this humiliation, but later, as the Wolfe and Ellington families clashed at every turn, it was always the Ellington family who lost. Seeing that the Ellington family was about to be pushed out of the top social circle, they had no choice but to relent and bring up the original engagement again.
They claimed it was simply because Adrian was not ready for marriage at the time, and that they had not considered things thoroughly enough.
The engagement remained, but all the initiative now lay in Adrian’s hands.
He neglected Mara just as he had once neglected Evelyn, and allowed others to mistreat Mara just as they had once mistreated Evelyn. He wanted Mara to taste the pain Evelyn had suffered.
For the sake of love, and for her own family, Mara swallowed all of this.
But even so, all these years Adrian had never laid a hand on her—this was the first time.
He hit her, and did so in front of everyone.
In the end, Mara could not hold back. As tears streamed from her eyes, she turned and ran out.
With the main character gone and nothing left to watch, the onlookers began to disperse. Only the assistant stood there nervously, unsure whether to advance or retreat.
At that moment, Adrian finally moved.
He looked up at the assistant, who was frozen in place, and said only one thing, “Today’s schedule is canceled.”
After speaking, before the assistant could react, Adrian’s figure had already walked far away.
By the time the assistant came to his senses, Adrian had completely disappeared.
But not long after, Katherine called Adrian. “What happened? Why did I hear you canceled today’s meeting with Mr. Townsend?”
“I…” Adrian instinctively wanted to mention the person he saw today, but as soon as he began, he suddenly remembered that Katherine had been one of those who forced Evelyn to leave him back then.
The words caught in his throat, and he forced them back down. After a moment of silence, he decided to keep it a secret. “It’s nothing.”
Katherine naturally sensed his concealment and wanted to press further, but she also knew that now Adrian was the head of the Wolfe Group. If he did not want to talk, no one could force him, so she suppressed her question.
After all, if she wanted to know what happened, asking Adrian was never the only way.
After a pause, she asked about something else, “I heard you hit Mara in public today?”
Adrian did not hide this from her, or perhaps he simply did not care. He responded indifferently, and upon hearing his answer, Katherine could not help but sigh.
“What are you really thinking? If you truly do not like Mara, just send her away and do not leave her with any hope. Do not give her hope with one hand and treat her coldly with the other.”
Adrian did not explain his intentions. His voice remained distant and cold. “I have my own plans.”
Of course, he would not let Mara leave so easily.
At least, not until Evelyn returned to his side.
No matter how long it took, he was willing to wait.
Fortunately, she did not make him wait too long.
