My Fiancé Lived With My Best Friend So I Left Chapter 05

Damian’s body went rigid. Trembling, he asked me, “Valentina, what did you just say?”

The ambulance arrived quickly. I was lifted onto a stretcher and taken into the emergency room.

When I woke again, I was already in a hospital room.

Seeing me open my eyes, the nurse bent over and warned me, “Don’t move around. You have a cracked rib and a mild concussion.”

I did not have the strength to speak. I could only nod at her.

The door to the room was pushed open.

When Damian saw that I was awake, he let out a breath of relief.

His eyes were bloodshot, but his tone was still cold.

“Valentina Rossi, you almost ruined your whole life for that man.”

I looked at him and instinctively waited for his inner voice.

But there was nothing.

In the room, I could only hear the beeping of the monitor.

I froze for a few seconds, then let out a long breath.

Finally, it was quiet.

Damian’s face turned deathly pale.

His voice trembled.

“What do you mean, finally quiet?”

I did not answer him. I treated him like air.

I fumbled for the phone by the bed and called Vincent Romano.

“Vincent Romano, this is Valentina Rossi.”

Every word made the injury in my chest ache.

“I didn’t give up the seat, but I also failed to arrive on time.”

“Do I still have a chance?”

Vincent’s voice was steady.

“I reviewed yesterday’s candidates. None of their records were stronger than yours.”

“I’ll give you one final chance. Bring your resume to the Northern Commission headquarters for an interview.”

“Whether you stay depends on your performance.”

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“All right.”

After hanging up, I closed my eyes.

I no longer had a home.

I could not lose this work too.

Damian stood by the bed and finally seemed to come back to himself.

He looked at me, eyes reddening.

“Valentina, you’re not just angry. You really don’t want our home anymore?”

I said nothing.

But he seemed to hear something again, and his voice lowered.

“You don’t just not want our home. You don’t want me anymore?”

There was a knock at the hospital room door.

Bianca came in carrying an insulated food container.

“Valentina, you’re awake? I brought you something to eat.”

She had just started to enter when I pressed the call button by the bed.

The nurse soon pushed the door open.

“I want to rest.”

The nurse turned to Damian and Bianca.

“The patient just woke up and needs quiet. Family members should step out for now.”

Damian did not move.

He reached out, still wanting to touch my shoulder.

I turned my head away.

Don’t touch me.

Disgusting.

His hand froze in midair, and his whole body swayed.

“Valentina…”

I closed my eyes.

This time, I could not hear his inner voice.

But it seemed he could hear mine.

The phone by my bed vibrated several times.

Vincent had sent messages.

[I only just found out you were injured.]

[I’ll hold the seat for you for a few days. I’ll explain things to personnel.]

[Valentina Rossi, the chance is still there. Don’t push yourself too hard.] Looking at those lines, my eyes stung.

He could not hear my inner voice.

But he knew what I wanted most right now.

I replied with only two words.

[Thank you.]
