Yvosha studied his ashen face, her tone as detached as if she were narrating something that had happened to a stranger.
“Three years ago, Cordella offered me one hundred million dollars and a three-year contract. The conditions were straightforward. As long as I played Mrs. Vorretti for three years – didn’t file for divorce, didn’t kick up any trouble – the money would be mine. Everything you just listed off,” Yvosha said with the smallest shrug, “was part of the job description.”
“No… impossible…”
Damiel stumbled backward until his shoulders hit the wall.
He couldn’t seem to fit her words into his head.
“You’re lying.”
He stared at her.
“If you didn’t love me, why would you risk your life giving me your kidney? Yvosha, stop trying to twist the knife. What do you want from me? What will it take for you to stop?”
At the mention of the kidney, Yvosha’s thoughts went to Petra.
That kidney was meant to have purchased Petra a chance at living.
In the end, it had bought nothing at all.
Her expression hardened.
“That was a transaction too. Your mother traded Petra’s bone marrow for one of my kidneys.”
She looked at Damiel, who seemed about ready to fall apart, and shaped each word with chilling precision.
“As for you – I never loved you. Every moment I spent in your presence made me sick.”
Damiel stood motionless, scanning her face for any flicker of a lie.
There wasn’t one.
When she was finished, Yvosha didn’t bother sparing him another look.
She turned and walked out of the room.
The boardroom door clicked closed behind her.
Damiel stood there a long while without moving.
“Never loved.” “Sick.”
The words were like nails, driven one after the other into his skull.
Impossible.
How could it possibly be true?
She had to have said it just to wound him.
She hated him, and so she had aimed straight for the place she knew would bleed the most.
