15 Days Before I Left Him Chapter 16
Anthony closed his eyes, his heart already shattered into pieces by this news.Â
“Dorothy, the person who saved me six years ago was not you.”
Dorothy’s pupils contracted, and she felt a wave of nervousness. Clearly, it had been confirmed back then that she was his savior, so why was Anthony bringing up the past now and insisting she was not the one who saved him? Yet she still maintained her composure on the surface, smiled gently, and tried to take his hand.
“Anton, what nonsense are you talking about?”
The helplessness after Genevieve’s disappearance and the overwhelming guilt upon learning the truth crashed over Anthony like a tidal wave, leaving him gasping for air. At that moment, he finally exploded, violently shaking off Dorothy’s hand and shouting at her with reddened eyes.
“It was Genevieve! The one who saved me was Genevieve, who has been by my side for twenty years! Stop lying! I have already found the evidence. Why did you deceive me?”
Seeing Anthony so distraught, Dorothy realized she could no longer keep the truth hidden. Back then, she had only come to the hospital to visit a friend. When she passed by Anthony’s bed and saw his handsome face, she couldn’t help but linger for a moment, never expecting to encounter him waking up and mistakenly identifying her as his savior. For reasons she couldn’t explain, Dorothy did not deny it. It turned out she had planned to use this identity to get close to him and be with him. But unexpectedly, her family suddenly sent her abroad to study, and they lost contact just like that. It was not until half a year ago, when she was diagnosed with cancer, that she returned to the country and reconnected with Anthony.
Dorothy explained in a panic. “Anton, at that time I just wanted to use that identity to get close to you.”
Anthony was completely enveloped in despair. He no longer wanted to argue with Dorothy about why she had lied to him; he only wanted to draw a clear line between them and then make amends to the person he had hurt.
“Get rid of the child immediately.”
Dorothy panicked instantly. This child was the last hope she could leave for her family; she could not let it go!
“No! It already has a life. If you were its mother, could you bear it? Besides, Genevieve already knew about my pregnancy half a month ago. I suppose your wedding today has already been canceled, hasn’t it? In the future, if I give birth to my child, wouldn’t it be good to leave a descendant for the Pearson family?”
Anthony was about to leave, but his steps halted when he heard her last words. Half a month ago?!
A wave of uncontrollable grief spread from his chest, gradually enveloping his entire body, and tears streamed down his face in large drops. So Genevieve had known about the pregnancy long ago, which was why she decided to leave that day, why she had been so calm these past two weeks, and why she had shown no sign of surprise at the hospital that day… Yet Anthony had not noticed any of this.
Every time he thought about how he had hurt Genevieve for so long because of Dorothy, the impostor, a stabbing pain shot through his heart.
He wiped away his tears, his eyes filled with unprecedented determination. He would not let Dorothy keep this child. He had to find Genevieve, apologize to her, and make up for all the kindness she had shown him over the past twenty years.
Seeing that Anthony was about to leave, Dorothy, disregarding her own ‘illness,’ got out of bed and hugged his waist tightly. “Anton, after these six months together, can you really say you have no feelings for me at all?”
However, at that moment, only Genevieve’s image appeared in Anthony’s mind. The girl who used to follow him at a distance during their school days. The one who, after they got together, would thoughtfully prepare hot toddy for him.
He could not deny that, at first, he chose to be with Genevieve simply out of curiosity about whether someone’s feelings could really last that long. At that time, he had not invested much emotion. Later, after five years of being together day and night, he felt her thoughtfulness and care. He finally realized that there really was someone who could love him with unwavering devotion for twenty years. He thought that, unknowingly, he had already fallen in love with her.
When Anthony looked at Dorothy, his eyes were filled only with unfamiliarity and indifference. “Never. I will never contact you again.”
